Feedback.

That’s a word that’s usually associated with rock music. You know, it’s the sound guitarists get when they hold their guitar up the amp and let it ring. Or it could be the sound of a massive PA system squealing. And when it comes to guitar feedback, no one mastered that quite like Jimi Hendrix.

But feedback in your hearing aid? That’s a sound you definitely don’t want. In the case of hearing aids, the pathway of sound from the loudspeaker opening (receiver) to the microphone input is along the side of the hearing aid or earmold in the ear canal, or through a vent. If the earmold or shelltype hearing aid fits snugly into the ear, and the vent is not too large, sound is unable to leak out and reach the microphone located outside the ear canal, in which case the aid won’t squeal.

But when hearing aids or earmolds fit too loosely in the canal, the opposite can result. In general, a loose-fitting hearing aid or earmold is more likely to squeal than a tight one. Audiology Associates in Santa Clarita can help you adjust your hearing aid so you won’t be dealing with this issue.
